Cityspace: Spaces to breath and reflect in the city of Edinburgh

Reflective space details

Seven Sacrament Room in the National Gallery

Description

This octagonal room features the Seven Sacraments - a series of paintings by Poussin. Each of the paintings hangs on a different wall as each is designed to be viewed independently. The room has been sensitively designed, incorporating elements from the painting in the interior features - for example the floor and lamp. This is a quiet space where you can sit and linger for a while, enjoying the paintings or the quiet space. People come in and out, but few stay long. In the midst of the city bustle, this is a great place of peace and quiet.

Enter the main door of the gallery, on the ground floor there are two ‘sides’ of the gallery.  Once you’ve passed through the foyer area, turn left and enter the east side (this side also has the men’s toilet). Opposite the entrance to the men’s toilet is the door way into the hexagonal room with the paintings.
